Social Sharing Toolkit

Sharing posts & pages

The plugin currently supports the following networks for sharing:

  • Facebook (like, share and send buttons)
  • Twitter
  • Buffer
  • Google +1
  • Pinterest
  • Flattr
  • LinkedIn
  • Tumblr
  • StumbleUpon
  • Delicious
  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Myspace
  • Hyves

On Tweet buttons you can specify a Twitter handle which is then appended to the tweet a visitor sends (like “… via @WordPress”). An email send button is also included.

You can decide which networks to support on your blog, where the buttons will appear (either above or below the content). Through drag and drop you can easily change the order in which the buttons appear.

For each button you can choose a different type (not all types are available for each button):

  • button
  • button with counter on the side
  • button with counter on top
  • small icon
  • small icon with text
  • medium icon
  • medium icon with text
  • large icon

You can also choose the orientation of the buttons:

  • horizontal (buttons are placed side by side)
  • vertical (buttons are placed below each other)

Divider

In version 2.0.4 three dividers were added to each list. These might be useful in ordering the buttons, especially in the case of varying button types used with a horizontal orientation. A divider will split the element containing the buttons in two, allowing for more customization.

Shortcode

It is also possible to only let the buttons appear where you want by using shortcode. The shortcode function has it’s own list of buttons with the same possibilities as the list for posts & pages. Use the shortcode [social_share/] in the content where you would like to display the buttons.

Widget

The widget has it’s own list of buttons with the same possibilities as the list for posts & pages. You can however specify a fixed title and url to use for the buttons in the widget.

Follow Widget

Since version 2.0.0 an extra widget is added with the possibility to provide easy links to your profiles on other social networks.

The networks currently supported for the Follow Widget are:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Pinterest
  • Goodreads
  • LinkedIn (including company and group links)
  • Tumblr
  • Myspace
  • Hyves
  • YouTube
  • Flickr
  • 500px
  • Instagram
  • Picasa
  • DeviantArt
  • Last.fm
  • Spotify
  • Soundcloud

A button for an RSS feed is also included. Of course the type, order and orientation of the buttons is also configurable for the Follow Widget. Each button for the Follow Widget supports the following types:

  • small icon
  • small icon with text
  • medium icon
  • medium icon with text
  • large icon

To use a button you must enter your user id or username for the network. To use the RSS feed button you must enter the full url.

Automatic Twitter links

This plugin also includes a configurable & improved version of my earlier Automatic Twitter Links plugin. You can decide if you want to convert Twitter names and/or hashtags to links. Twitter names will link to their Twitter profile and hashtags will link to the Twitter search page.

Bitly

Since version 2.0.5 the plugin has the option to use bitly to shorten the urls for the tweet button. To use it you need to register with bitly and fill in your bitly username and API key.

Pinterest

Since version 2.0.5 the plugin has the option to show Pinterest buttons. The plugin tries to find the featured image or first image in the content if available. If no image is available the button is omitted.
Since version 2.0.7 is is possible to enter the URL of a default image to use in case no image was found. You can also set the plugin to always use the default image regardless of any available images.

Open Graph

Since version 2.0.5 the plugin also has the option to automatically create Open Graph tags on your WordPress site. These will tell Facebook for example which image to display when sharing a page. You can enter the URL of a default image to use in case no image was found. The plugin will try to use the thumbnail attached to the post (if your theme supports it), or the first image it finds in the content. To turn of this behavior you can check a box which will force the plugin to always use the default image you have specified.

Upgrading from version 1.3.2 or lower to 2.0.1 or higher?

Be aware you should reset your settings as these will be lost in the update. This is because the plugin uses an entirely new and more versatile system to save settings. Sorry for any inconvenience, this should be a one time thing.

Known bugs

  • Some themes might be incompatible, such as Karma theme which uncontrollably manages to mutilate the button codes.

Feel free to leave any comments, questions, requests or recommendations on this page. If someone has a problem and you know the answer, please help by sharing your solution!

In the Toolbar, the Pinterest Icon isn’t showing up – all others are showing.

    • Marijn Rongen

This can happen if there are no images available in the content. To always display the Pinterest button you should add a default image for Pinterest under the Advanced settings tab of the plugin.

Hi I would love to show the icons rather than the buttons on my pages, but don’t see a place to specify that. They look great in the widget, I want the smaller ones in the pages. Is that possible?

    • Marijn Rongen

You can choose the type of button from the dropdown list with every button in the list. Most sharing buttons also have icon versions.

      • Stephanie

I’m only seeing button options for the Content tab, I see the icon options for the follow widget…. I just installed so I should have the latest version…

  • Edgar

do you think you could add the small button for g+

    http://www.google.com/intl/en/webmasters/+1/button/index.html

    • Marijn Rongen

I would like to add icon options to the G+ button, but this is not supported at the moment. Unfortunately the button sizes provided by Google differ from most other sharing buttons.

  • Gael

Hi, since the last update this plugin is not compatible with the facebook comments anymore – the comments won’t load (first I thought my facebook comment plugin wasn’t working anymore, but I then manually added the last html5 code provided by Fb and it worked only by deactivating your plugin)

What can I do to make it compatible?

    • Marijn Rongen

I will look into this issue and will fix this as soon as possible.

    Hi,

I submitted a comment on April 11th, but it says it’s still waiting for moderation. It’s a similar question to Jake’s and I’m wondering if it’s the same thing for Pinterest, Tumblr and XING. Please advise. Thank you.

  • http://monkeysandmountains.com Laurel

Just as a follow up to my previous 2 comments, I just noticed that the Pinterest and XING buttons are working properly on your site, so not sure why they’re not working on mine.

    • Marijn Rongen

      Hi Laurel,

I think you may have included too much of the url in the field, try only including the part containing the username or userid.

  • Carol

Can I add spaces between the buttons? I’m only using 5 medium icons with the Follow widget. It would be great if I could separate them a few pixels more, aligning them with the width of my side bar (centralising them as oposed to all to the left and a white space to the right).
If there’s a way, I’d love to know!

    • Marijn Rongen

Currently this is only possible by changing the CSS of the theme or the plugin. I will add the option to specify margins in a future version.

Hey just got the plugin and like it so far…

I have one issue though whenever i have the include buttons in excerpts button checked i get an internal 500 error

but when i have it unchecked i dont get any buttons in my posts unless you go directly to the post

    any ideas?

    • Marijn Rongen

Try 2.0.8, it should fix this issue. If not let me know, including the theme you use.

    FEATURE REQUEST:
I love this plugin and it does EXACTLY what I want it to do. (and it’s the only one that I can get to do precisely what I want)

Would be great to have a feature that allows it to appear on the home page as well. It seems all of the so-called “pros” have their social stuff appear here as well, and I’m just copying what they’re doing. :-)

P.S. If you’re interested, I found a couple popular themes that kind break the plugin a bit because of the way they do the css in the themes (just the StumbleUpon button), but strangely they all broke it in the same way. However, I fixed it with a tiny bit of css change to the plugin and it works on all the themes I’ve tried so far…at least, for my setup.
Would you be interested in seeing this code? I’d be more than happy to share it with you. Let me know. Your stuff rocks! Thank you!!

    Thanks!
    Mike

    • Marijn Rongen

      Thanks Mike,

Your fix has been included, in a more specific variation working for both the side and top-counter variations of the button.

  • http://viversemchefe.com Pablo

    Hi Marijn,
I just updated to version 2.0.7 and the site just went down, so I had to deactivate the plugin. I am currently using the theme Yoko v1.0.4 by Elmasestudio and WordPress 3.3.1.
Any ideas on how to solve it.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    • Marijn Rongen

This is solved in 2.0.8, tried and tested with the Yoko theme!

      • http://viversemchefe.com Pablo

It is! Thanks a lot Marijn. It worked really good :-)

  • http://refarmers.com Heather

The Pin It button refuses to show up when selected under the Share Buttons. However, my Pinterest button selected under Follow Buttons does. Am I missing something?

    • Marijn Rongen

      Hi Heather,

If there are no images in the content, the Pinterest button for sharing will not be displayed. To fix this you can enter the URL of a default image to use on the Advanced settings tab of the plugin.

Great plugin, I just added it to my site in place of another one. However I noticed that clicking on the Facebook Like button does not bring up the Facebook share dialog that allows users to comment on their Like/Share before posting it. Is there away to enable this through your plugin?

    • Marijn Rongen

This needs another type of implementation of the Like button, I will look into the possibility of including this implementation in a future version.

      • http://majamaki.com/ Terry Majamaki

Thanks. Its a good option to include as it allows users to comment on what they are sharing. It works similar to the Share button but is done with the Like button and is inline by only appearing when the Like button is clicked, similar to the Google Plus button.

  • http://fashiondevelopmentgroup.com/ Sheryl

Is there a way to get the social media icons to stay with the blog post after my posts are e-mailed using FEEDBURNER??

They are not on my blog posts when they are mailed out to my Subscribers??

    Thanks

    SB

    • Marijn Rongen

The buttons are automatically filtered from showing up in feeds as this created some unwanted behaviour for some people. I will look into adding an option to disable this filter in a future version.

      • http://fashiondevelopmentgroup.com/ Sheryl

The buttons are showing up but the only button displaying correctly in BOTH my RSS feed and my e-mailed posts is the Facebook button.

Here is what my e-mail Subscribers are seeing when they get my posts:

        http://feeds.feedburner.com/fashiondevelopmentgroup/HuDH

The Twitter Button is spelling out the word TWEET

        HELP!!!!

        • Marijn Rongen

I’m still looking into this issue, but the buttons should not appear in feeds. I hope to fix this in the next version.

          • Andy Beal

Is there a way for us to block this from the RSS feed, while you are working on a fix? Thanks!

  • http://kategibbs.com kate

    Hello
I just reinstalled the plugin with the new update and it only works if I have the excerpt button clicked, which I don’t want. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks

    • Marijn Rongen

Could you specify in more detail what works and what doesn’t? Please also specify which options you have chosen.

  • http://www.theenvironmentalblog.org JT

Is there a way to hardcode into template. I would like to get some of the buttons to show up in my category pages. But I have no idea how, and the shortcode function doesn’t seem to work for that.

    • http://one2m.ca Kevin Gordon

      Yes there is.

In your theme, put in the following line of PHP where you want the buttons to show up

      • http://one2m.ca Kevin Gordon

Huh, it removed my php code…

In your theme, make a PHP tag, in the tag put in…

        echo do_shortcode(‘[social_share]‘);

And that will put the social sharing options where ever the tag was.

  • Suzanne

I can’t get the Facebook “Like” button to appear. Also when I click on Facebook share it gives me a page error. I am using 2.0.8

    • Suzanne

Nevermind…it seems to be working now…Thanks

  • http://www.explorationtravelmagazine.com/ Nancy

The buttons are not showing up on all my posts and the sharing portion is not working at all. It also doesn’t play well with my plugin to post “More articles of interest” at the end of each post.

The plugin version I am running is 2.0.8 so I know it’s not an update issue.

I’m afraid I’m going to have to find something else.

  • http://www.nuzzapp.com Tilmon Brown

How do I add a space or two and/or pixels between the displayed buttons/text ? They appear too close together on smartphone and tablet devices.

    • Marijn Rongen

It is possible to do this by changing the css of the plugin, but I plan to include an option in the settings to specify extra horizontal and/or vertical padding.

  • http://www.mirrorministries.org Daphne Delay

On the Facebook share button, it grabs my logo instead of the blog image. And it also grabs the website description instead of the blog title.

Is there a way I can tweak this to grab the specific blog details?

thanks for the plugin—it’s really perfect (other than my question haha) thanks again!

    • Marijn Rongen

You can use the OpenGraph options on the Advanced settings tab to help Facebook get the best data, including the image, for the share button.

  • http://monkeysandmountains.com Laurel

    Hi Marijn,

Thank you so much for your help. I see that some fields only wanted the “ID” and I had included the entire url. It’s working fine now. Thank you!
    Laurel
