Social Sharing Toolkit

Sharing posts & pages

The plugin currently supports the following networks for sharing:

  • Facebook (like, share and send buttons)
  • Twitter
  • Buffer
  • Google +1
  • Pinterest
  • Flattr
  • LinkedIn
  • Tumblr
  • StumbleUpon
  • Delicious
  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Myspace
  • Hyves
  • App.net

On Tweet buttons you can specify a Twitter handle which is then appended to the tweet a visitor sends (like “… via @WordPress”). An email send button is also included.

You can decide which networks to support on your blog, where the buttons will appear (either above or below the content). Through drag and drop you can easily change the order in which the buttons appear.

For each button you can choose a different type (not all types are available for each button):

  • button
  • button with counter on the side
  • button with counter on top
  • small icon
  • small icon with text
  • medium icon
  • medium icon with text
  • large icon

You can also choose the orientation of the buttons:

  • horizontal (buttons are placed side by side)
  • vertical (buttons are placed below each other)

Divider

In version 2.0.4 three dividers were added to each list. These might be useful in ordering the buttons, especially in the case of varying button types used with a horizontal orientation. A divider will split the element containing the buttons in two, allowing for more customization.

Shortcode

It is also possible to only let the buttons appear where you want by using shortcode. The shortcode function has it’s own list of buttons with the same possibilities as the list for posts & pages. Use the shortcode [social_share/] in the content where you would like to display the buttons.

Since version 2.1.2: Use one or both of the url and title attributes to override these settings with your own information. Example: [social_share url=”http://www.mywebsite.com” title=”My Website”/]

Widget

The widget has it’s own list of buttons with the same possibilities as the list for posts & pages. You can however specify a fixed title and url to use for the buttons in the widget.

Follow Widget

Since version 2.0.0 an extra widget is added with the possibility to provide easy links to your profiles on other social networks.

The networks currently supported for the Follow Widget are:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Pinterest
  • Goodreads
  • LinkedIn (including company and group links)
  • Tumblr
  • Myspace
  • Hyves
  • YouTube
  • Flickr
  • 500px
  • Instagram
  • Picasa
  • DeviantArt
  • Last.fm
  • Spotify
  • Soundcloud
  • App.net

A button for an RSS feed is also included. Of course the type, order and orientation of the buttons is also configurable for the Follow Widget. Each button for the Follow Widget supports the following types:

  • small icon
  • small icon with text
  • medium icon
  • medium icon with text
  • large icon

To use a button you must enter your user id or username for the network. To use the RSS feed button you must enter the full url.

Automatic Twitter links

This plugin also includes a configurable & improved version of my earlier Automatic Twitter Links plugin. You can decide if you want to convert Twitter names and/or hashtags to links. Twitter names will link to their Twitter profile and hashtags will link to the Twitter search page.

Bitly

Since version 2.0.5 the plugin has the option to use bitly to shorten the urls for the tweet button. To use it you need to register with bitly and fill in your bitly username and API key.

Pinterest

Since version 2.0.5 the plugin has the option to show Pinterest buttons. The plugin tries to find the featured image or first image in the content if available. If no image is available the button is omitted.
Since version 2.0.7 is is possible to enter the URL of a default image to use in case no image was found. You can also set the plugin to always use the default image regardless of any available images.

Open Graph

Since version 2.0.5 the plugin also has the option to automatically create Open Graph tags on your WordPress site. These will tell Facebook for example which image to display when sharing a page. You can enter the URL of a default image to use in case no image was found. The plugin will try to use the thumbnail attached to the post (if your theme supports it), or the first image it finds in the content. To turn of this behavior you can check a box which will force the plugin to always use the default image you have specified.

Upgrading from version 1.3.2 or lower to 2.0.1 or higher?

Be aware you should reset your settings as these will be lost in the update. This is because the plugin uses an entirely new and more versatile system to save settings. Sorry for any inconvenience, this should be a one time thing.

Known bugs

  • Some themes might be incompatible, such as Karma theme which uncontrollably manages to mutilate the button codes.

Feel free to leave any comments, questions, requests or recommendations on this page. If someone has a problem and you know the answer, please help by sharing your solution!

I’ve installed this and I’m not seeing any buttons show up.
am I adding anything to this shortcode [social_share/] or just dropping into the html as is?

My site has the function built in for the blog [f-like], [fb_share] [tw] [googlepages] but I want that same function on certain pages. I thought this might be the solution but it appears not.

    • Marijn Rongen

You can’t add anything to the shortcode. By using the options in the shortcode tab of the plugin settings page you can define which buttons should be displayed.

    Hei Marijn,

    congratulation for your wonderful plugin!

I just did the German translation. Maybe you want to use it in the next update?

    Thanks for all

    Kil

    • Marijn Rongen

      Hi Kil,

I’ve just sent you an e-mail. I’ll be glad to include your translation in the next update!

Is it possible to add the buttons to the opening post?

    • Marijn Rongen

Heb je de optie “Toon knoppen in samenvattingen” aangevinkt? Dat zou het wellicht doen.

  • Bindiya Bhatt

    Hi Marijn,

The Social Sharing Toolkit is awsum. But I just want to make the similar buttons appear on the home page with all the posts. Please help!

    Thanks,
    Bindiya

    • Marijn Rongen

Have you checked the “Include buttons in excerpts” option?

  • http://bradchristopher.com Brad

Hi! If I have a post that is just a picture and someone chooses to share that with say Tumblr, for example, is it supposed to post that picture on the Tumblr. I love the way everything is set up. It seems great. I gave it a test run, trying to do exactly that, and when I check on Tumblr, it is simply a link back to my entry. This won’t work for me. Is this the only way it can be set up? Is this just a Tumblr thing? Are there other sites it will do the same thing with? Maybe I have it set up wrong. I appreciate anyone’s help. I tried reading through everything and haven’t seen the topic discussed which leads me to believe I have maybe done something wrong. Thanks again!

    • Marijn Rongen

      Hi Brad,

This issue will be dealt with in the next version! The first or featured image of the post will then be shared with the link.

      • http://bradchristopher.com Brad

Do any of the other sharing buttons have this problem besides Tumblr right now? Thanks for your reply!

  • Betsy

general settings tab is the only one showing. The other tabs all have disappeared. The content, share widget, follow widget, advanced features, etc. are all gone.

    • Marijn Rongen

That is strange, could you tell me which browser you use, it may be the cause of the problem.

    Hi,

    Great plugin ! :)

Can you please add a flattr button to your list? would be great since at this stage I need a separate plugin for this.

    Thanks,
    Philip

    • Marijn Rongen

A Flattr button is on the to-add list!

On my Homepage before EVERY blog is the word TWEET now.

The buttons are showing up on the e-mailed posts but the only button displaying correctly in BOTH my RSS feed and my e-mailed posts is the Facebook button.

Here is what my e-mail Subscribers are seeing when they get my posts:

    HELP!!!!

  • Vivian

Under “Share Widget”, how can I make google+ using large icon? I don’t see the option.

    Thanks!

    • Marijn Rongen

G+ will have icons in the next version. They are not yet available in the current version.

  • http://www.incredibleiceland.com/ Robert

Great plugin – except it does not work for my frontpage. It works well for content on post, but when I try to use the share widget on the sidebar on frontpage it wont show up? Any ideas what could be wrong?

    • Marijn Rongen

Have you specified the buttons in the share widget tab of the settings page?

  • http://faithsglutenfree.com Larry

How do I get the Pinterest share button to appear? I’ve set the default image and even checked/unchecked the checkbox to use the default and nothing.

    • Marijn Rongen

      Hi Larry,

What button type have you chosen in the Share widget tab?

  • http://www.wantthefilm.com Jie-Ming

Hi, I love the pluggin. it’s doing what I’m looking for.

    Except following:

I’ve added the twitter button to post. When I click it it only shows the title and my twitteraccount. I’m also expecting to get the bit.ly link as well.

I can’t find in the set up where I can change this.

    • Marijn Rongen

Looking at your source it seems you have not entered correct bitly username and / or API key!

  • Will

Hi there, I have installed your plugin and on every page, I am seeing the count on twitter as 2 and linkedin share count as 1 but no such activity exists on each site. Is there anything you can recommend to correct these stats? Thanks

    • Marijn Rongen

Can’t help you there, if Twitter or LinkedIn has registered shares it will show them.

  • Marco

    Hi,
I changed following lines in social_sharing_toolkit.php in order to disable the sharing buttons when “Show sharing buttons on this post” is not ticket:

    function: prepare_scripts()
replace the last line “return $bookmarks;” with following block:

    $SharingStatus = get_post_meta( get_the_ID(), ‘sharing_disabled’, true );
    if ($SharingStatus != 1) {
    return ‘Share this: ‘ . $bookmarks;
    } else {
    return false;
    }

So when you disable the sharing function for a post the buttons won’t be displayed any longer :)

  • http://elblogdelupi.com Isidora Morales

    Hi there ^_^
Is it possible to center the buttons?
    Thank you!

    • Marijn Rongen

I’ll add this to the to-do list!

      • http://elblogdelupi.com Isidora Morales

you are the best, THANK YOU!

  • http://www.one2photography.com Paul

Great plugin, I’m just not a fan of how “pin it” works. I would much rather that it work like the pin it bookmark does, where I have the choice of the image that I would like to pin from the blog post. Is this on the list of to dos?

    • Marijn Rongen

I have plans of making a separate plugin which adds a Pinterest button to every image in the posts. If I can get it to work reliably I will include this in this plugin as well.

      • Daniel Eriksson

        Go for it. Good luck.
I have a problem when pinning that there is only a thumbnail of the pinned image showing up on my Pintereset account, and the image is cropped to a square.
        Any suggestions?

  • http://dogsinpubs.com/ Keith

    Hi,

Is there any way of disabling this for certain posts – i.e. sticky posts?

    • Marijn Rongen

I’m working on including more options to give users more control over the inclusion and exclusion of sharing on certain posts.

  • http://www.ben-ah.co.uk Ben Armstrong-Haworth

Hi. I’ve implemented your share buttons which are great, nicer than the last plug in I was using. Not sure why, but the counter on the Facebook share (i.e. actual share, not just like), doesn’t appear to show up. I’ve set it to “Button + top counter” as I have with the other buttons, but it doesn’t come up. Am I doing something wrong? I did manage to see it briefly appear on one post, but then I refreshed the page and it disappeared again. Any help would be appreciated, ta :o )

    • Marijn Rongen

      Hi Ben,

This is the default behaviour of the Share button. The bubble is only shown when the page has been shared. No wrong-doing on your end to worry about.

  • Alex S

Is it possible to change the behavior, using the shortcode?

    • Marijn Rongen

At the moment, no. You can only specify where the buttons should appear. It always uses the settings from the shortcode tab.
